Tenzin Dolma from Mcleod Ganj was crowned the Miss Tibet 2007 in a glittering ceremony at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts.

Around 2000 people in the audience cheered as Tsering Chungtak, the Miss Tibet 2006, crowned the new Miss Tibet.

The show started amid fire crackers, lighting of the Free Spirit torches, and a speech by the Director of the pageant. He spoke on Miss Tibet, Tibetan language, Tibetan politics and the Tibetan Olympics, ending with a call for the release of Ronggay A'drak, who publicly protested the Chinese rule of Tibet a month ago.

After the announcement of the new Miss Tibet, the Director of the pageant presented the winner Tenzin Dolma a cheque of Rs. 100,000 (2,500 USD).

Tsering Yangzom from Kollegal, Karnataka State, was adjudged the first runner-up. She was given a cheque of Rs. 50,000.

Yangzom also got the highest votes in the Miss Photogenic voting contest, securing 1170 votes.

Deeki Dolma stood at third place, and received Rs. 25,000.

The jury members were: Phil Void, a musician and long-time Tibet-supporter from USA; Tara Chang from Singapore, formerly a Gyrotonic instructor in Miami and Pilates instructor in Sydney; Ajay Singh, an events organiser from Himachal Pradesh; and Mary Harrison, who has been in beauty pageants and worked as a flight stewardess.

The Free Spirit Award was also presented during the pageant. The award was given to the Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) for its work for the Tibetan cause this year. Their members unfurled a Free Tibet banner in April at the Everest base camp, and another from the Great Wall of China in August, lasting for two hours.

The organisation's President, Tethong Lhadon, was also in Beijing, trying to meet the President of the International Olympics Committee. She was blogging directly from Beijing.

Tenzin Choeying, the President of the SFT India chapter received the award on behalf of the organisation.

Dolma is a call centre executive and a part-time model in Delhi. She will be preparing to go to participate in the Miss Earth Pageant in the Philippines.
