Tashi Yangchen is crowned Miss Tibet 2004

In a glittering programme with over-packed audience and media frenzy, Tashi Yangchen, 24 from Sikkim, was crowned Miss Tibet 2004. The crowning took place at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, Mcleod Ganj, Dharamsala, India.

Tsering Kyi, who reigned as Miss Tibet 2003, travelled all the way from Austria, to pass on the crown to the new Miss Tibet. Tashi Yangchen was adjudged the new Miss Tibet by a jury consisting of Utsav Arora, a journalist from the Times of India; Alvia Zaidi, a social worker; Hemant Kumar, a journalist from Dainik Bhasker; and, Priya Thal, a model from Pune.

Talking to media persons, Tashi Yangchen said, "It is a dream come true for me. But I know the Miss Tibet title also carries a huge responsibility. I will try my best to contribute through this title for the cause of Tibetan people and live up to the expectations of everybody."

After the crowning, the Pageant Director, Lobsang Wangyal, presented a cheque of rupees one lakh (Rs 100,000), as a scholarship to the new Miss Tibet.
