Chinese government officials have pressured organizers of a Malaysian beauty pageant to bar Tibet from their event.

Miss Tibet 2006, Tsering Chungtak was asked by pageant organizers to wear a sash that read Miss Tibet-China. Chungtak refused and pulled out of the contest. Writing on her website, Chungtak explained her decision:

"I felt that this was not acceptable to me at all. The Tibetan issue is still the same as ever. China is in control of Tibet, and there is no freedom in Tibet. China constantly violates human rights, and threatens the environment in Tibet, causing concern about the very survival of the Tibetan people,"

Chungtak said after returning from Malaysia.

According to the BBC, Beijing has not made an official comment about the incident.
